Wednesday 30th April - The kids are doing well...

Busy, busy night preparing for a long day tomorrow and kitting up for a walk / wild camp come the weekend. But, to more pressing matters; seems mum and the kids are doing just fine...

Bloody kids, eating me out of house and home..

Any spare down left to replace the stuff that escapes from my jacket?

Friday 25th - Sunday 27th April - Wet Limestone, not good! SPA Training in the rain...

Friday evening and I dash to Heversham and Dallam Outdoors for my SPA training course. Pleasantly surprised on joining the course to find that Ian Oldham was running the course as Ian had run the ML training last summer and we'd got on really well. Admin and introductions over and Natalie, Nigel, Rachael, Graham and YT were off to Kendal Wall for some warm-up games, stretching, group management and climbing blindfold, handcuffed and "bungy-ed". A late finish (10:30) made the Saturdays early start seem just a bit too early!

Saturday and Glen joined us before we set off to Farleton Knott, just over the M6. Leading on ice-like severes in the rain, setting up abseils to retrieve gear, guidebook use and more leading and top roping before lunch did the morning in. Then it was straight off to a Quarry near Bendrigg for work on group abseils, etc., still in the rain / drizzle, before doing a runner back to the Centre for dinner. After dinner a couple of hours in the classroom covered legal and access issues, wrapping up a tough day.

Sunday and we were off to Lindale Slabs. It was raining hard enough to warrant waterproofs in the carpark and the slabs themselves were at a good level for kayaking down! No bother though and soon we were busy setting up group abseiling, top & bottom ropes, playing with pulleys and prussiks, etc. Eventually the sun came out making a bit of top-roping and rescuing stuck abseilers and crag-fast climbers much more fun than might have been had the rain continued. One brief highlight was the sound of a pair of swans flying low over the crag to the accompaniment of a very interested (and vocal) robin!
In all a good course, plenty learned and to learn, but looking forward to going for assessment next summer.

Friday 25th April - You have mail....

Just had mail from Paolo and Vanessa, the couple we paddled with at Christmas...

Wednesday 23rd April - Squatters?

Since the sun came out again this afternoon, I decided to crack on with trying to tidy the garden up - a job I started yesterday, but only got as far as putting a bit of compost into some pots and juggling a few bits n'bobs about. I'd been conscious of a thrush pecking over the lawn (huh!) for the last few days; as I went to lift one of the pots off the wall, all was revealed...

Looks like four of the ugly little bleeders in there...

Mum seems proud enough though

Sunday 13th April - Buckstone HOW?

Sue, Dugal, Bruce all off to Buckstone How fior Sue's first clamber on rock. Well, had Groove One been suitable that is (it wasn't). Mind you, just getting to the crag over manmade spoil and ruined tramways from the old quarry was, erm, interesting in itself... The dogs certainly enjoyed leaping about on the loose slate, eyeing up the odd sheep, though for the humans a little more care was required.

Bruce preparing to eat my camera...

Back to the car to drop rope and rack off, then followed the fence away up the fellside toward Dale Head; time of day and the call of the Fish Inn at Buttermere led to an early change of plan...

Friday 11th April - Another one knocked off...

So, since I had to drop the tumble-drier off at Donal's in Carlisle, and needed to visit Keswick, why not knock off one of the more elusive Wainwrights while I was at it? The weather was interesting, either raining, sleeting, snowing or sunshine, so I didn't plan on going too far, or high. Little Mell Fell hit the spot; so long as I was prepared to commit to 20 minutes, it was in the bag! And, sure enough, I was and the sky stayed cleared apart from a light snow flurry on the top. Forty three to go I think...

Towards Helvellyn from the summit - still plenty of snow about

Sunday 30th March - Lunch at the Newfield Inn : )

A leg-stretcher before lunch; from Froth Pot (Birks Bridge, but I like Froth Pot!) in the Duddon, up into the Dunnerdale forest to Grassguards farm, then along the ridge above Wallowbarrow Gorge, round below the Crag and down, over the river, to the Newfield Inn. Fine sunny day with a bit of a breeze, only about 4 miles, but well worth it - lunch was good as well!

The Newfield Inn, Duddon Valley

Saturday 29th March - Bimble along the Duddon

Not too much water about, but we didn't really want to visit the Leven again, so it was off to the Duddon Valley with Paul and Mark.
