Sunday 28th September - Porpoises at St Bees

Still no water in the Lakes, so we headed down to St Bees in the hope that the surf I had seen on Saturday would still give some fun. Sadly not - everything had flattened off and the Irish Sea was in a particularly benign mood.
Paul thought he'd spotted something from the carpark and, once we were on the water, we both saw the porpoises. A good half mile off the beach and heading north, possibly a dozen or so, broaching regularly but not letting us get too close. OK - no surf, but well worth getting out to sea - if you see what I mean...

Saturday 27th September - Monk's Bridge, River Calder

A lazy day, no plan but just bumbling around Whitehaven then a short walk from the Cold Fell road along the river Calder to Friars Bridge (allegedly the oldest packhorse bridge in the Lakes) and playing with the camera.

In Whitehaven harbour

Typical Bruce!

Sue on Friars Bridge ( the Calder needs lots more water!!)

Monday 1st September - Big and bouncy at St Bees

Paul, Andrew and Donal; high tide, sunshine and two days of onshore breeze. Paul's van was soon loaded with boats and we were off to St Bees. The surf being more impressive than we had thought (and the after-effects of the previous evenings "sport") meant that Donal stayed on shore with his camera...
Getting out through the surf wasn't easy...

...and didn't get any easier!

Then there are the groynes to avoid...

Well worth it though!
